Pakistan is facing a grave energy challenge which has serious implications for its fragile economy and national security. For its energy needs, Pakistan relies heavily on expensive imported fossil fuels. High generation cost of IPPs, capacity payments, unsustainable levels of circular debt, weak infrastructure, and poor service delivery have compounded the problem. Pakistan is gifted with abundant resources of renewable energy, especially water, sun, wind channels, and biogas ingredients. Under the circumstances and in light of ambitious benchmarks set by the international community for adopting renewable energy, it is imperative that Pakistan carries out a well-planned and phased transition towards green and sustainable renewable energy. This research paper will discuss different dimensions of the energy problem in Pakistan, outline the potential of renewable energy resources, and present recommendations for a steady shift away from fossil fuel-based energy to non-polluting and green renewable energy sources.
